Everyone talks in weird slang, similar to gumshoe detective novels from the 1930s, except these characters are all in a present-day high school setting. Brendan crosses drug dealers in the high school who look and act like a mafia boss in a Sam Spade movie, and the entire premise sees Brendan as a modern-day gumshoe looking for clues while often getting beaten up along the way. Brick won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance and helped Johnson kickstart his career.
